I got a call today from BYU saying that due to an opening I would be allowed to attend starting fall semester. The last couple of months I have been really set on Utah state and have been excited to attend there but now I have to decide if I would attend there over BYU. I want to know everyone's opinion. I realize that I am basically asking a family of Cougars but I still need some help on this decision. I have thought of a few things that I like in these colleges and you will see that it is basically split.
- Campus size (small>big)
- Closeness to family
- Closeness to Bear lake
- Price (BYU is much cheaper)
- Missionary Prep
- Relative closeness to Best Snowboarding areas
- Housing (I currently have the best housing reserved for me at USU)
I am open to any advice and help from anyone.

I'm Biased and say avoid Provo at all cost's. But no one listens to me ever and probably for good reasons. Maybe because I seem unable to heed my own advice.
I would say BYU for cost and standards.. (knowing that your roomates are supposed to follow the honor code as well). But Alyssa was just visiting USU campus and loved it. Sorry that doesn't really help you make a decision... but I loved BYU when I was there. Provo really isn't so bad, especially as an undergrad. Good luck on your decision.
Patrick, that's a tough one. Seth and Kirsten like BYU, and we were impressed with the mission prep opportunities Seth had freshman year. Most everything at BYU is within walking distance, but that may not affect you, since I suspect you'll be taking a car. Any idea what you want to major in? Different academic areas at either school have different strengths, and that may not be a factor freshman year (I suspect you'll have a good experience no matter where you go), but might be important down the road. Good luck with the decision.
looks like a win win choice, but I'd say Utah St. (down uncle Mike, down). It's smaller, you're still relatively close to family and bear lake, it's a large lds population so you still get some good mission prep, snowboarding - check, and good housing. If you don't like it after a year you can still transfer to BYU. Looks like you're in a great spot though so don't think about it as a right/wrong decision - they're just different.
Dear Patrick, sorry to be so late in getting back to you but it has been a very, very busy week. I somewhat agree with what Uncle Matthew has said, for all the same reasons. But pushed to the wall, I would give the nod to BYU. This may just be prejudice on my part but a major school like BYU can show you a broader range of experiences and possibilities than you can receive in a smaller school. Having said that I don't think you can make a bad decision. If I were you I would pray about it then stop thinking about it for a short time and respond to the feeling you get that is not the result of overthinking. This is called revelation. You will be guided to do what is best for you.
The school you attend the first year before going on your mission isn't as important as the one you will attend upon your return.
If you went to BYU would you have an opportunity to continue playing racquetball? I definitely believe that BYU would be more challenging.
In this one, Patrick, I don't think you can make a mistake. Follow the whisperings of the Spirit and you will be fine.
Love Grandpa
PS: Just for the record I (Grandma) think you should try USU for your first year. This is the first time you have been away from home for an extended period of time and I think a smaller school might be best. But I also agree with what Grandpa told you. You will be happy wherever you are. Love Grandma
